Only two weeks after launching its SEQR mobile payment app in the U.S., Seamless is bringing the wallet service to the U.K.
The expansion into the U.K. keeps Stockholm-based Seamless on target with its global expansion, having launched the SEQR wallet in Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Italy during March and April prior to the U.S. launch in June.
Seamless partnered with Optimal Payments to develop technology needs in the U.K. market prior to launch.
By offering a smart, adaptable mobile payment service, weve been able to attract some of the biggest operators in the market," Peter Fredell, CEO of Seamless, said in a June 25 press release.
"Now that were starting to work with merchants and consumers, were creating the right conditions to be able to establish ourselves as the biggest mobile payments provider in the U.K. as well, a market with around 60 million potential customers, Fredell added.
U.K. consumers using the SEQR mobile wallet will be able to transfer money person-to-person instantly and make purchases from retailers using the Shop on the Spot app, Seamless said in the release.
Consumers can make instant purchases by scanning a QR code displayed on a retailer's advertisement, digital banner or billboard.
Since its inception in 2001 as a mobile phone top-up service, Seamless developed SEQR's original code-scanning technology and broadened it to include Near Field Communication payments, allowing consumers to pay in stores, at restaurants and parking lots, in addition to e-commerce or in-app transactions.
The U.K. market will be the first in which SEQR users can establish a prepaid account from which to process payments. Users will be able to use the SEQR app to transfer money from their bank account, monitor their balance in real-time and top up the account with new funds when needed.
The SEQR app is now available for U.K. consumers, and Seamless expects the first merchants accepting the service to begin routing transactions by the end of the summer.
