The city of Taichung in central Taiwan plans to install 1,500 readers by the middle of next year that accept all contactless prepaid transit cards issued throughout the country, an official from the city’s department of transportation tells PaymentsSource.

“Our aim is to allow prepaid bus cards issued by other cities in Taiwan to be used in Taichung,” he adds.

The city’s public transportation system currently only accepts Taiwan Easy Go prepaid bus cards, which riders also may use in the neighboring cities Changhua and Nantou, according to the official. “In affect, we want [residents] from Taipei to come into the city and use Taipei’s EasyCard over here,” he adds.

The total cost to integrate and upgrade the system is an estimated NT$100 million (US$3.2 million or 2.3 million euros), the official says.

“For this, the city has applied for a subsidy of NT$45 million from the central government’s Ministry of Transportation and Communications,” he says.
