Thales upgrades hardware security module monitoring

Cyber and data security provider Thales e-Security has launched a new version of its hardware security module monitor, which allows network operators to watch activity on numerous modules through a single dashboard.

Thales launched CipherTrust two years ago, and the upgraded software now monitors both Thales HSM models — payShield and nShield — at all times to provide instant visibility to alerts, tamper attempts, real-time status and capacity, Thales said.

Network operators use HSMs to manage and protect encryption keys and other critical data on payments networks. They are typically housed in unattended data centers or private clouds in remote locations, a scenario Thales considers inconvenient when users need to access the HSM.

"CipherTrust Monitor 2.0 provides customers with the ability to monitor their HSMs from the convenience of their own office, dramatically reducing their ongoing key management costs," Peter Galvin, vice president of strategy at Thales, said in a May 24 press release.

"The ability to remotely and centrally track HSM operational health, capacity and loading reduces the need to travel to manually retrieve important data."

Together with audit logs that can be used for regulatory compliance, the upgraded monitor brings "convenience, cost reduction and reduced downtime,” Galvin said.

Thales says the CipherTrust Monitor 2.0 will help operators identify performance bottlenecks to improve capacity planning; enable immediate response to issues through alerts; eliminate the need to physically access an HSM to retrieve important data; integrate seamlessly with existing HSM hardware and software; and offer access to configuration and data through administrator, group manager and auditor roles.

The latest version of CipherTrust Monitor will be available during the second quarter of 2017.

Thales operates out of San Jose, Calif., and Plantation, Fla., in the U.S. It also has security operation centers or offices in France, Australia, the U.K., the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, India and Norway.
