Total System Services has developed a product that allows consumers to control their card accounts from smartphones or computers.
Called TSYS Authorization Controls, the product enables users to turn their accounts "on" or "off" remotely. The product can integrate with existing mobile and online customer services tools, allowing consumers to manage their own account preferences.
Other uses include setting an account to authorize only the next transaction, enable recurring payments despite account status to avoid disruption of regularly paid bills, and send alerts for every transaction attempted while an account is in an "off" status.
There is a demand for these controls, TSYS says, citing its 2013 consumer study that found more than half of consumers expressed interest in using their phone to temporarily allow or block transactions.
Other companies have deployed similar technology. City Bank, a Lubbock, Texas-based community bank, uses technology from Malauzai Software that allows users to disable cards remotely.
