The payment processors Global Payments Inc. and Optimal Payments Plc have begun supporting MasterCard's MasterPass digital wallet.
MasterCard launched its digital wallet a year ago in Canada before bringing it to Australia, Italy, the United States, the United Kingdom and China. MasterCard's agreements with U.S.-based Global Payments and Isle of Man-based Optimal Payments extend MasterPass' availability in the regions these companies serve.
Global Payments is making the digital wallet available to North American merchants. MasterPass allows consumers to make payments using a stored payment card by providing MasterPass credential instead of an account number at checkout.
"Consumers have an expectation, regardless of whether they are shopping in the physical or digital realm, for a secure and convenient experience," says Michael Cyr, group executive for U.S. Customer Delivery at MasterCard, in a March 27 press release.
Optimal Payments has fully integrated MasterPass into Netbanx, its merchant platform. The processor's customer base spans almost 200 countries.
