Through an arrangement facilitated by the European alliance of debit card schemes known as EAPS, holders of girocard debit cards issued in Germany as of July 12 may access the 63,000 ATMs within the United Kingdom’s Link electronic funds transfer network.
Zentraler Kreditausschuss operates the girocard scheme in Germany. Both Link and Zentraler Kreditausschuss are founding members of EAPS, whose framework provides a European alternative to the international card brands, namely Visa and MasterCard.
Payments schemes participating in EAPS were responsible for more than 9 million ATM and purchase transactions in 2009, according to Ugo Bechis, EAPS chairman and head of SEPA Payments at Italy’s UBI Banca.
European Union regulators established SEPA, or the Single Euro Payments Area, to help facilitate cross-border payments within euro countries in Europe.
