JTH Tax Inc., which does business as Liberty Tax service, is offering customers the option of getting their tax refunds on a reloadable, general-purpose, prepaid card marketed by NetSpend Corp.
The NetSpend All-Access Liberty Prepaid Card is issued by Inter National Bank in McAllen, Tex., and runs on the Visa Inc. network. It can be reloaded at any of the 65,000 retail sites that work with NetSpend.
NetSpend, an Austin company, and Liberty, a Virginia Beach firm, announced the partnership last week. They did not disclose the length of the agreement except to say it was "multiyear."
John Hewitt, Liberty's chief executive, said in a press release that his company is using the card "as a brand builder beyond the time limits of the tax season, and incorporating its use for employees and franchisees."
H&R Block Inc. has offered a similar product, its prepaid Emerald Card, for several years. Russ Smyth, the tax preparer's CEO, told investors last month that it expects to end the coming tax season with more than 3 million Emerald cardholders.
