Visa has elected Lloyd A. Carney as the twelfth member of its Board of Directors and a member of the Board’s Audit and Risk Committee. His position came into effect June 11.

Carney is the CEO of data center networking hardware and software company Brocade Communications Systems, where he has been since 2013. He is also a member of its Board of Directors.

Charlie Scharf, Visa’s CEO, said in a June 12 statement that Carney’s background and knowledge of technology networks would be valued at the payments giant as it strives to innovate and evolve.

Before he arrived at Brocade, Carney led information technology and hardware company Xsigo Systems as CEO and director from 2008 to 2012. He was also CEO of IBM-owned networking management software company Micromuse and chairman of its board of directors from 2003 to 2006.

Carney has held senior leadership roles at networks solutions companies throughout his career like Juniper, Nortel and Bay Networks and was previously a director of Cypress Semiconductor and Technicolor S.A.
