Planet Payment Inc., a Long Beach, N.Y.-based payment-services company, says it launched this week Payment BuyVoice, a service that enables merchants to complete payment card transactions using a telephone. The service relies on voice-recognition software to handle the transaction. To use the service, merchants dial a toll-free number, enter a password and PIN, and follow the voice prompts either to say the credit card information or key it in. Planet Payment says the service supports address verification and the use of the card verification value and card validation codes printed on the backs of most payment cards. Planet Payment classifies the transactions as card-not-present, a spokesperson says. The company says the service is designed for mobile merchants, such as taxi drivers, household-service companies and delivery services that have limited access to traditional point-of-sale terminals. BuyVoice does not require consumers to download software to a phone. Merchants can use any cellular phone or landline phone. Planet Payment says BuyVoice supports multiple currencies, and the company is looking for other locations to launch the service, which has been available in the United Kingdom since September.
