E-commerce technology provider Wirecard has integrated Bluetooth Low Energy into its mobile wallet for wireless payments.

The Munich-based company is calling the service Bluetooth BLE Smart Payment, using technology which is considered a longer-range alternative to Near Field Communication. (Other companies that use BLE tend to brand it as Beacon or iBeacon.)

By using BLE, data can be transferred up to 33 feet, and merchants can access location-based services using small transmitters. The technology is compatible with Apple, Google and Window operating systems. Wirecard also supports NFC and QR codes to execute mobile payments.

The Wirecard mobile wallet will be able to communicate with point of sale systems, and offer a range of services such as loyalty programs, vouchers and personalized offers, the company said in a Jan. 16 press release.

Other companies, including PayPal and Apple have also deployed systems that use BLE technology. Shopkick uses BLE to bolster its location-based marketing and rewards service.
